[00:00:00] Another Record Breaking Year for CES
It’s tough to get a true sense of the vast scale of the Consumer Electronics Show without attending. Here to help us wrap our minds around this enormous event is Consumer Technology Association Manager, Industry Communications, Danielle Cassagnol, who informs us that this year broke the record for exhibitor space with 2.9 million net square feet across Las Vegas. Danielle gives us a snapshot of the different tech sectors that are being represented in the various convention centers around the city. Listen in to grasp of the size of this event.
[00:06:23] History of CES and Exciting Health Tech
2019 marks the 52nd year of CES in its current form, with over 180,000 attendees and 4,500 exhibitors; but did you know that CES got its start at another show? Consumer Technology Association Manager, Industry Communications, Danielle Cassagnol, and Mike Etchart fill us in on CES’ humble beginnings in the bowels of the NAMM show in Anaheim, California. Then, Mike wonders if being bombarded with new tech year after year has dulled Danielle’s reaction to it, but she assures us that she remains intrigued, and exhausted. One sector that has caught Danielle’s interest this year is digital health. With offerings that set out to solve a myriad of hyper-specific problems with devices that address real world issues like chronic diseases, opioid dependence, and mental illness, with or without the assistance of drugs. Find out why Tivic Health’s device that uses microcurrent technology to relieve pain from sinus pressure is one of Danielle’s top picks.
[00:12:30] Miracle-Gro is at CES 2019?
When walking around CES you inevitably run into companies you wouldn’t expect to see there, like Scott’s Miracle-Gro. Is Miracle-Gro bringing us talking, robotic plants? Or maybe virtual gardens? Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mike Sutterer, assures us there is a perfectly grounded reason for them to be there – the Miracle-Gro Twelve Indoor Growing System, an indoor farming unit that blows everything that’s come before it out of the water. Not everyone can go farm-to-table, but now with Miracle-Gro’s latest innovation, you can go ‘arm-to-table’. Overcome your fears and inhibitions about indoor farming and listen in!
[00:19:50] Miracle-Gro Twelve Indoor System
Upwards of 90% of people want to grow inside their home, but less than 25% of people actually do it. Scott’s Miracle-Gro Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mike Sutterer, explains that this is due to the limitations of space, lighting, and a fear of failure. Their most recently unveiled product, the Miracle-Gro Twelve Indoor Growing System, puts your mind at ease with an easy to use app that monitors and notifies you of your plant’s needs and status. A hydroponics system, the Miralce-Gro Twelve has four space for plants and built-in lighting and an aesthetic, minimalistic design. Start from seed or subscribe for a rotation of new, ready-to-go plants every 8 weeks. You also have the option of transferring the soil-based plants found at your local garden center to the system with no hassle. Learn more at Miraclegrotwelve.com.
[00:27:56] Surround Sound and Noise Canceling
While the overall representation from headphones, and audio in general, at CES has been decreasing over the last few years, innovations and growth in the market have not. Audio journalist for SoundSage! Solo, The Wirecutter, and JazzTimes, Brent Butterworth, tells us about the most interesting thing he’s seen at CES 2019 – the Dolby Dimension Wireless Headphones. Worth every penny of the $600 price tag, this set of wireless headphones does amazing well, especially for a company like Dolby who have never released a consumer product before. An unmatch surround sound virtualizer that feels authentic, the ability to detect whether a signal has been virtualized before, avoiding muddling sounds to the point of incomprehensibility. Keep an eye out for these bad boys on Amazon.com or Dolby.com.
[00:35:51] Eardrum Suck and Bluetooth Quality
As noise cancellation technology gets better, the effects of eardrum barotrauma (or ‘eardrum suck’) get worse. Nobody seems to know why this happens, nobody except for our man on the case and audio journalist for SoundStage! Solo, The Wirecutter, and JazzTimes, Brent Butterworth. Brent has been working on a quasi-scientific article for some time and is almost ready to publish his findings. Then, we learn about the AptX HD and Sony’s LDAC upgrades for Bluetooth codec technology that will allow for much higher quality audio to be transmitted from your phone to a pair of wireless headphones. Stay up to date on headphone technology.
